Submission to Publication – A Practical Workshop on Publishing in the Social Sciences

Course Type: Online-Workshop
Target Group: Advanced doctoral researchers and postdoctoral researchers in political science and cognate social science disciplines

This workshop will provide professional training on research publishing for advanced doctoral students and postdocs in political science and cognate social science disciplines. Participants will learn strategies for communicating efficiently and effectively in English language journals and other research outlets. (Participants from all linguistic backgrounds are welcome but the course will be focused on publishing in English language scientific journals.)

There are four strands to the workshop:

1. Discussion of the nuts and bolts of academic publishing from submission to publication,
2. Reflecting on your ‘academic voice’ and creating a personal publication plan,
3. Developing a conference paper into a journal manuscript,
4. Post publication promotion.

This is a practical workshop: as a prerequisite for participation, each participant must bring a draft conference paper (of circa 4,000-5,000 words) which they will develop into a draft manuscript over the two days. Focused writing sessions will be combined with group discussion time and practical guidance on writing.

We will address topics such as defining one’s publishing goals, identifying relevant target audiences (discipline, wider academic community, policy makers, general public; local, national or international) and publishing outlets (articles, book chapters, reports, newspaper articles, blogs) for different types of research, language and communication style for multiple and overlapping audiences, developing your academic voice, the content and style of manuscripts, the process from submission to acceptance and final publication, discoverability of your research (titles, keywords, methods) and promoting your research after publication through blogs, vlogs, podcasts social media and research repositories.

On successful completion of the workshop, each candidate will have a publication plan and a draft journal manuscript.
