Academic Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences
Course Type: Workshop
Target Group: Doctoral researchers
This workshop is designed to improve the participants’ writing skills within the academic field. For this purpose, the steps of the writing process – from the first idea to the finished text – are untangled and separately discussed. Participants are also provided with both a broad variety of helpful techniques and practicable knowledge about the English academic writing style. There will be opportunity to benefit from the exchange with the group and to give and receive feedback.
The workshop takes place on campus on June 4, 2024. On June 10, participants may consult the trainer via zoom and get 30 min individual feedback from the trainer on specific aspects of their texts (time slots will be scheduled in the workshop).
Contents in brief:
- the writing process and the chunking method
- ways to develop structure: tools, paragraphs, Toulmin Model of argumentation
- style: criteria for good style, standard situations, close reading for language
- helpful dictionaries and databases
